# Can I Wipe Over My Socks During Wudu?
## Question
I wear socks throughout the day. Do I need to remove them every time I make wudu, or can I wipe over them?
## Answer
Yes, you can wipe over your socks during wudu instead of washing your feet, but specific conditions must be met.
### Conditions for Wiping Over Socks (Masah)
1. **Put them on in a state of purity**: You must have performed complete wudu before wearing the socks
2. **Time limit**:
- Resident: 24 hours (1 day and night)
- Traveler: 72 hours (3 days and nights)
3. **The socks must be thick enough** to walk in normally and remain on the feet without tying
### Evidence from Sunnah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
**"When you put on your socks while in a state of purity, wipe over them. The resident may wipe for one day and night, and the traveler for three days and nights."**

Safwan ibn Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
**"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were travelers, not to remove our leather socks for three days and nights except in the case of janabah (major impurity), but not in the case of defecation, urination, or sleep."**

### How to Wipe
- Use wet hands to wipe over the **top** of the socks
- One wipe from the toes toward the shin is sufficient
- No need to wipe the bottom or sides
- Both feet should be wiped
### When You Must Remove Them
1. Time limit expires
2. Major impurity (janabah) occurs
3. The socks are removed
### Practical Note
Modern cotton or synthetic socks are acceptable according to the majority of contemporary scholars, as long as they're thick enough to walk in and stay on the feet. Very thin, see-through socks do not qualify.
This concession makes maintaining wudu easier, especially at work or when traveling.
