Tafseer: Surah Al-Asr - The Value of Time and Success

# Tafseer: Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3)
## Arabic Text
**وَالْعَصْرِ**
**إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ**
**إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ**
## Translation
*"By time! Indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience."* (Surah Al-Asr, 103:1-3)
## Brief Tafseer
This short but profound surah contains a complete formula for success in this life and the Hereafter. Imam Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "If people pondered upon this surah, it would be sufficient for them."
### Key Points:
**1. Allah Swears by Time (وَالْعَصْرِ)**
Allah takes an oath by time itself, indicating its immense importance. Time is a witness to human actions and the passage of our lives. Every moment that passes is an opportunity either gained or lost.
**2. Mankind is in Loss (إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ)**
The default state of humanity is one of loss. As time passes, we are moving closer to death and our meeting with Allah. Without purposeful action, we are losing the most valuable commodity we possess - our time in this world.
**3. Four Criteria for Success (إِلَّا الَّذِينَ...)**
Allah provides the exception - four qualities that save a person from loss:
- **Iman (Faith)**: Believing in Allah, His Messenger, and the fundamentals of Islam
- **Righteous Deeds**: Putting faith into action through worship and good character
- **Enjoining Truth**: Advising others toward what is right and true
- **Enjoining Patience**: Supporting one another in remaining steadfast on the path
### Practical Lesson
Success is not individual but communal. We need faith and action, but we also need community support - both giving and receiving advice, and helping each other remain patient through life's trials. This surah teaches us that wasting time without these four elements is the real loss.
May Allah make us among those who use their time wisely and attain true success.
