The Best Among You: Excellence in Character
Sunan Abu Dawud #4682, Sunan al-Tirmidhi #1162 (authenticated as Hasan Sahih)
# Hadith of the Day: The Best Among You
## English Translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
**"The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character, and the best of you are the best to their wives."**
## Narrator Chain (Sanad)
This hadith was narrated by Abu Hurairah (d. 59 AH), one of the most prolific companions who narrated over 5,000 hadiths. The chain of narration is authentic and found in multiple hadith collections.
## Key Lessons
### 1. **Character is the Measure of Faith**
This hadith establishes a profound connection between faith (iman) and character (akhlaq). True faith is not merely about rituals; it manifests in how we treat others. The Prophet ﷺ teaches us that the completeness of one's faith is directly reflected in their moral excellence.
### 2. **Excellence Begins at Home**
The second part of the hadith emphasizes that true nobility of character is tested in our homes, particularly in how men treat their wives. It's easy to display good manners in public, but the real test is in our private conduct with those closest to us.
### 3. **Practical Application**
- **Self-Reflection**: Regularly assess your character. Are you patient, kind, honest, and humble?
- **Family First**: Prioritize good treatment of your spouse and family members
- **Consistency**: Maintain the same high character in private as you do in public
- **Continuous Improvement**: Good character is a lifelong journey of refinement
## Historical Context
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known as "Al-Amin" (The Trustworthy) even before his prophethood. His character was so exemplary that Allah describes him in the Quran: "And indeed, you are of a great moral character" (Quran 68:4). This hadith reinforces that following his example means embodying excellent character in all aspects of life.
## Reflection Question
How can you improve your character today, especially in your interactions with your family members?
---
*May Allah grant us the ability to perfect our character and follow the example of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.*
