# Dua Before Sleeping - Protection Through the Night
## The Dua
### Arabic Text
**بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا**
### Transliteration
**Bismika Allahumma amootu wa ahyaa**
### Translation
**"In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live."**
---
## When to Recite This Dua
This beautiful and concise dua should be recited **when you lie down on your bed to sleep**. It is one of the essential supplications from the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that provides spiritual protection throughout the night.
---
## The Wisdom Behind This Dua
This short yet profound dua contains deep meanings:
1. **Remembering Allah First**: By beginning with Allah's name, we acknowledge that our sleep and waking are entirely in His control.
2. **Sleep as Minor Death**: The word "amootu" (I die) refers to sleep, which is described in the Quran as a minor death, as our souls are temporarily taken.
3. **Waking as Resurrection**: The word "ahyaa" (I live) refers to waking up, which is like a mini-resurrection, reminding us of the Day of Judgment.
4. **Complete Reliance on Allah**: This dua expresses our complete dependence on Allah for both our sleep and our awakening.
---
## Related Quranic Verse
Allah says in the Quran:
**اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا**
*"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep."* **(Surah Az-Zumar: 42)**
This verse beautifully explains the connection between sleep and death, making this dua even more meaningful.
---
## Additional Sunnah Practice
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us to:
- Lie on your right side when going to sleep
- Place your right hand under your right cheek
- Recite Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah: 255)
- Recite the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
- Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each
---
## Make It a Habit
Try to incorporate this simple yet powerful dua into your nightly routine. Even if you recite nothing else, remember Allah's name as you close your eyes. This small act of worship can bring:
✨ Peace of mind
✨ Protection from harm
✨ Barakah (blessing) in your sleep
✨ A beautiful way to end your day in remembrance of Allah
May Allah protect us through our nights and grant us peaceful, blessed sleep. Ameen.
