# Tafseer: The Wise Counsel of Luqman - Establishing Prayer
## The Verse
**Surah Luqman (31:17)**
### Arabic Text:
**يَا بُنَيَّ أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا أَصَابَكَ ۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ**
### Translation:
"O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination."

This beautiful verse captures the timeless advice of Luqman al-Hakeem (Luqman the Wise) to his beloved son. Allah immortalized this counsel in the Quran as guidance for all believers.
### Key Points:
**1. Establishing Prayer (أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ)**
Luqman begins with Salah because it is the pillar of the religion and the direct connection between the servant and Allah. The word "establish" (aqim) means to perform it perfectly with all its conditions, pillars, and etiquettes - not merely to "pray" but to establish it completely.
**2. Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil**
After perfecting one's personal worship, the believer must care for the community. This is a collective obligation upon the Ummah. It requires wisdom, knowledge, and gentleness - teaching us that righteousness extends beyond individual practice.
**3. Patience (الصَّبْرِ)**
Luqman knew that those who stand for truth will face trials. Patience is mentioned after commanding good and forbidding evil because opposition is inevitable. True patience means remaining steadfast on the path of righteousness despite difficulties.
**4. Matters of Determination (عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ)**
Allah describes these actions as requiring strong resolve and determination. They are not easy, but they represent the highest qualities of a believer - qualities that require continuous effort and unwavering commitment.

- **Prioritize Salah** - It is the foundation of all good deeds
- **Be active in goodness** - Faith requires action in our communities
- **Expect challenges** - The path of righteousness is not always easy

### Scholarly Insight:
Ibn Kathir mentions in his tafseer that Luqman combined the rights of Allah (prayer) with the rights of creation (enjoining good and forbidding evil), then sealed it with patience - which is needed for both.
Imam al-Qurtubi notes that patience here encompasses three types: patience in obedience to Allah, patience in avoiding sins, and patience with life's trials.
