# Can I Wipe Over My Socks During Wudu?
## Question
Is it permissible to wipe over socks (instead of washing the feet) when performing wudu? What are the conditions?
## Answer
Yes, it is permissible to wipe over socks during wudu according to authentic Sunnah, but specific conditions must be met.
### Evidence from Sunnah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ permitted wiping over socks (khuffayn). Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
*"I was with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and I bent down to take off his khuffayn (leather socks). He said: 'Leave them, for I put them on when I was in a state of purity.' So he wiped over them."*

### Conditions for Wiping Over Socks
1. **Put them on in a state of purity** - You must wear the socks after completing a full wudu with washed feet
2. **Time limit:**
- Resident: 24 hours (one day and night)

The time starts from the first wipe after breaking wudu, not from when you wore them.
3. **The socks must be thick enough** to:
- Cover the area that must be washed (ankles)
- Allow walking in them
- Stay on the feet without tying
4. **They must be pure (tahir)** - Free from impurities

Wipe the top of each sock once with wet hands, from the toes toward the shin. You don't need to wipe the bottom or sides.
Safwan ibn 'Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
*"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were travelers, not to remove our khuffayn for three days and nights except in the case of janabah (major ritual impurity), but not in the case of defecation, urination or sleep."*
